Does Leadership Style Impact Employee Performance, Commitment, and Motivation?

In a pivotal study from the International Journal of Science and Research (IJSR), Adarkar et al. (2021) explored how different leadership styles profoundly influence employee performance, commitment, and motivation within organizations.


As a leader in the medical device industry, where innovation and rapid technological advancements are the norms, understanding and applying effective leadership styles, particularly transformational and authentic leadership, can dramatically enhance organizational outcomes. While this study is not industry-specific, the principles are closely connected.


This article summarizes the findings from the study and provides insight to guide current and future leaders by dissecting effective leadership traits and responsibilities, focusing on how these can foster an environment that supports outstanding performance and motivation.

Transformational Leadership

The positive effects of transformational leadership extend beyond individual employee performance to benefit the entire organization, creating a culture that embraces innovation and continuous improvement—key aspects in the constantly evolving medical device field.


Authentic Leadership

Though not explicitly mentioned in the initial study, authentic leadership aligns closely with transformational principles but adds a layer of personal authenticity. Authentic leaders are known for their transparency, sincerity, and consistency, which build trust and open communication within the team. In environments where ethical considerations and the impact of products on human health are paramount. Being an authentic leader ensures that the organizational goals align with ethical norms and social responsibilities. In the medical device industry, we see this at the ground level in hospital and operating room settings, as well as in product design and manufacturing.

While transformational and authentic leadership are highlighted as the most effective, other styles also play significant roles within different contexts:


  • Transactional Leadership: This style is results-oriented, focusing on efficiency and clearly structuring tasks and rewards. Transactional leadership can effectively manage routine tasks and maintain high production rates but lacks the flexibility needed to drive innovation.


  • Delegative Leadership: Also known as laissez-faire leadership, this style allows employees significant autonomy. It is beneficial for fostering creativity in R&D departments but may require careful management to ensure that strategic goals are met.


  • Authoritarian Leadership: This style may be effective in situations requiring quick decision-making and strict adherence to regulations and standards, though it generally suppresses creativity and can decrease employee morale over time.

 

Essential Traits and Responsibilities of Leaders

The effectiveness of a leadership style is also heavily dependent on the inherent traits and enacted responsibilities of the leader. Key traits that enhance leadership effectiveness in the medical device industry include:


  • Trustworthiness and Integrity: Particularly crucial in an industry affecting health outcomes.

  • Vision and Innovation: Essential for driving technological advancements and market competitiveness.

  • Adaptability: Critical in a rapidly evolving industry landscape.


Leaders are tasked with various responsibilities that directly influence their teams’ performance:


  • Setting Clear Goals: This is important in every aspect of business, from sales strategy to product development.

  • Providing Guidance and Motivation: Ensuring teams are focused, inspired, and aligned with the company's ethical standards and goals.

  • Fostering Professional Development: Supporting continuous learning and adaptation to new technologies and market demands.

  • Encouraging Collaboration: Promoting teamwork across interdisciplinary teams to innovate and solve complex problems.
