Catching Time

So much has happened in a short amount of time! Have you ever felt that way? Did it ever cause you to stop and reflect? On Friday, August 30, 2024, My Daughter Stephanie was married to a fine young man. They had each found the love of their lives, and it was an amazing celebration.

On the morning of the wedding, with a million things going on at her house, she gave me an amazing gift: a gold pocket watch. Fewer and fewer people are wearing watches these days, and I dare say fewer are sporting pocket watches. As a sentimental dad and one who can be quite nostalgic, I carried the watch with me in my Tux.

The church was the stunning cathedral in Chattanooga, Tennessee. It stood there amongst other buildings, quite unassuming, until you walked in and witnessed the grandeur of the hardwood floors and the amazing architecture. At 2:30, Steph and I were standing in front of the closed door at the back of the church. Before the door opened, I instinctively said, "Wait," and together, we looked down at the pocket watch.

A moment in time captured forever. It was the last minute before I gave away my daughter, the minute when she entered a new life and a new beginning. Some people would like to go back in time, some can't wait for time to pass, and still others will tell you it doesn't pass fast enough. One thing is for certain: time doesn't wait for anyone. You can't catch it, and you can't slow it down or speed it up.

But alas, it's not time we are all yearning to control, wishing we could go back, hoping it would go by in the worst of times, and stand still in the best of times; no, it's not any of that, but it is something that escapes us until we realize, it's not time we are chasing, and not time we are trying to stop or slow down, it's the moments in time. The moments in time that are frozen forever in our minds create the memories and are the times of our lives.

We need time, and time needs us because, without the passage of time, we could never become who we are and who we are yet to be. So don't sit and ponder how long something has taken or if you will ever arrive at a place a destination, whether you will be successsful, or finaly arrive at the place you deam of, enjoy the journey. The significance in time is not in capturing it; you never will. However, in the passage of time, what you can capture are the precious moments, and if you are present enough to take it all in along the way, you can revisit those moments in a lifetime, all over time.
